Living in Your Own Refection

Your surroundings are not only a reflection of yourself. That reflection also bounces back at you, setting your mood. Like a reflection in a pond of water how you see yourself is largely a picture of yourself in your surroundings.

So how important are your surroundings?
Can changing your surroundings change you?

The surroundings in which you live can be as important as how you live!! Later in life, many people stop thinking about changing their surroundings.

Has it been years since you redecorated?

Redecorating is more than just aesthetics. It's about creating a space that nurtures your emotional well-being, promoting feelings of comfort, joy, and connection.  The impact of décor goes beyond just color. Clutter, for instance, can be a silent mood killer. A disorganized space can overwhelm the mind, leading to feelings of anxiety and restlessness. On the other hand, a tidy and organized room promotes a sense of control and calm, allowing your mind to de-stress and unwind.

Ultimately, our surroundings are a canvas upon which we paint our lives. They provide the context for our experiences, shape our perspectives, and influence our choices. Your home is more than just a shelter; it reflects your personality and is a sanctuary where you seek comfort and rejuvenation. The way you decorate this personal space plays a significant role in shaping your mood and overall well-being.

Your personal touches also play a key role in shaping your emotional landscape.  Surrounding yourself with cherished photographs, beloved artwork, or souvenirs from meaningful travels can evoke happy memories and comfort. These personal elements transform a house into a home, a space that resonates with your identity and fosters a sense of belonging.

So why would you want to change it?

As we age, we may experience a decline in physical abilities or a loss of independence. Redecorating empowers older adults to take control of their surroundings and personalize their space to reflect their tastes and preferences. This can foster a sense of feeling more in control of your life.  In addition, your old décor may no longer be an accurate reflection of you. A space that feels truly "yours" can be a powerful mood booster.  When surroundings feel outdated, cluttered, or misaligned with your current tastes and needs, you can experience a sense of disconnection. It can lead to feelings of unease, discomfort, and even a sense of being "out of place" in your own living space.

So, look around. Is it possible that your surroundings are influencing your mood? Are old worn-out items in your home contributing to your feelings about aging?  Is your home still a true reflection of you? If not, some small changes can go a long way in giving you a new perspective and setting a new mood, and let’s face it, sometimes it is just fun to buy that new big-screen TV or a new sofa! Especially when it just might be good for our health.
