Aging and Myths

I’ve lived long enough to watch how the world talks about aging. We are often shown a version of aging that looks like decline, invisibility or disconnection. But I believe it’s time we challenge those old scripts and recognize that aging today looks very different than it did a generation ago. We are healthier, more active, more connected, and living longer than ever before. But despite this, so many of us still carry around outdated beliefs that can hold us back from embracing the lives we are living right now. So, let’s take a look at some of the biggest myths about aging.

Aging means we will be weaker and become frail…. Nope, frailty is not a given. With strength training, good nutrition and consistency, we can build strength well into our 80’s and beyond. Studies have shown that even people in their 90’s can begin training and make a difference.

Memory and mental sharpness always decline…. Although cognitive aging is real, so is brain plasticity. We can keep our minds sharp by staying socially and mentally engaged, learning new skills and staying curious about the world around us.

Older adults don’t care about their appearance…. Just scroll through Instagram and you will see how vibrant, expressive, and stylish older women are today. Caring about how you look isn’t vanity. It is confidence! Confidence doesn’t have an expiration date.

Intimacy and sexuality fade away…. They may look different with age, but they do not disappear. In fact, many people say they feel emotionally connected, confident, and more at ease in their skin later in life. This leads to richer relationships and deeper closeness.

Technology is only for the young…. If you are not embracing technology because you feel it is not relevant to you, then you are cutting yourself off from the world you live in. Older adults are embracing tech in incredible ways. We’re texting, video calling, shopping online, creating content and staying connected. Avoiding it because it might take a little practice is doing yourself a great disservice. Learning new things keeps your brain active and keeps you relevant and connected to today’s world.

Truth: Aging is not something to dread. It is an unfolding. There’s peace in knowing who you are. There is joy in living freely. There is beauty in every wrinkle that tells a story. We are rewriting what it means to age, one myth at a time. Stop buying into old stories and start writing your own.

Candice, this is one of your best blogs. I agree with everything you said but I especially liked when you said, “Confidence doesn’t have an expiration date.” It makes me feel so sad to see some of my dear friends “settling into old age” just because we’re in our 70s. Thanks so much for your true and encouraging words.

I think that sometimes we forget that we have a choice how we look at things.

    Well said.
My wife and I, both now in our 70’s, are closer now than ever, I believe our life/love has gotten better/stronger with age.
As I have matured, I appreciate our 50+ years together even more every day.
    Thanks

I totally agree with you. I am 81 and don’t look it because I care about the way I dress and always wear makeup. I exercise, walk and attend a yoga class. The secret to aging well is to keep moving. I’ve also embraced technology because it won’t go away because I don’t like it. A number of my friends have trouble answering their cell phone! The saving grace is I have no health problems. Keep on inspiring people. Remember: age is just a number. Some people are old at 50 and some people never seem to age.
